ALBUM: OUT OF THE WOODS
She sat down beside me then she said hello
Asked if I came there often. I shook my head oh no
I said it’s off the beaten path, but the band was sounding good
She praised the guy on bass and advised against the food
If life’s a book how would it read
If time’s money at least it’s free
If thoughts could kill we’d all be dead
If feelings were facts who’d get out of bed
When we walk with no fixed star
Wherever we go you know it’s right where we are.
At the break we stepped outside under the dark and cloudy sky
I said that I lived the next town over, that I’d just gone out for a ride
That I really didn’t drink now that I hadn’t thought I’d stay
As we went back in the bar, she said most every night’s that way
Time’s like cash can’t spend it twice
Take things slow That’s her advice
What we’ve thought is beyond belief
What we believe causes us grief
when we walk with no fixed star
Wherever we go you know it’s right—right where we are.
We ended up at a diner for some sweet potato fries
Then the band sat down with us, four strange and clever guys
Some nights are good for wandering without the light of a fixed star
Sometimes it’s hard—hard to remember; where ever we go, there we are
If life’s a book how would it read
If time’s money at least it’s free
If thoughts could kill we’d all be dead
If feelings were facts who’d get out of bed
When we walk with no fixed star
Where ever we go that’s where you are and
Time’s like cash can’t spend it twice…
Wherever we go you know it’s right—right where we are
The sky was black when we got walked back. I was afraid I’d been a bore
I said I’d had just gone out for a ride. She said I’d mentioned that before
She told me we’d had some fun. She hoped we’d meet again some time
She pulled me close, and kissed my neck, waved good-bye, and I felt fine
